Mitte is Berlin’s most central district by name alone – and also the district in which Berlin’s historic center is located. Since the administrative reform in 2001, Mitte is no longer an independent district, but a district within the district of the same name, which also includes the districts of Gesundbrunnen in the north, Wedding in the northwest, Moabit in the west and Tiergarten with the Hansaviertel in the southwest.

Berlin Mitte is about 10.69 km² in size and had a total of just over 107,000 inhabitants at the end of 2022. This results in a population density of about 10,051 inhabitants/km².
