Prenzlauer Allee in Prenzlauer Berg (Pankow district) is one of the major arterial roads connecting downtown Berlin with the outlying districts and, by extension, with the surrounding areas. Stretching approximately 2.8 kilometers, Prenzlauer Allee runs through Prenzlauer Berg from the intersection of Torstraße and Mollstraße (Prenzlauer Tor) in the south to the intersection of Wisbyer Straße and Ostseestraße. In the south, it merges into Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, and in the northeast, into Prenzlauer Promenade.
Along its entire length, I’d describe Prenzlauer Allee as a rather interesting and lively street. Here and there, you’ll also find beautiful views of Berlin’s various neighborhoods—and further down, a view of the Berlin TV Tower.
About halfway along, it runs, so to speak, between the Kollwitzkiez, Winsviertel, and Bötzowkiez—and there are actually many “authentic” shops, cafés, and restaurants all along its length.
A Walk Along Prenzlauer Allee
For a walk, I’d recommend starting at the northern end. And perhaps you don’t even need to walk the entire length of Prenzlauer Allee. The Prenzlauer Allee S-Bahn station offers a good starting point for a walk toward Mitte.
On the left, the first thing you’ll notice is the Zeiss Grand Planetarium—and the adjacent Ernst-Thälmann-Park.
A little further on, we come to the intersection of Fröbelstraße and Raumerstraße.
We continue along Danziger Straße. On both sides of Prenzlauer Allee, there are now small shops and stores. The streetcar in the middle of Prenzlauer Allee dominates the scene. At Knaackstraße, it’s worth taking a detour to the water tower.
On the left, between Heinrich-Roller-Straße and Prenzlauer Berg, is the cemetery—or rather, the former cemetery—“Leise-Park.”
After that, we reach the intersection of Torstraße and Mollstraße. Here, Prenzlauer Allee becomes Karl-Liebknecht-Straße.
