Ostseestraße, located in Berlin’s Pankow district, in the Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood, is a major, wide, and heavily trafficked thoroughfare. It stretches approximately 1.1 km between the intersection of Ostseestraße and Greifswalder Straße in the southeast and the intersection of Ostseestraße and Prenzlauer Allee in the northwest. At the intersection with Greifswalder Straße, it becomes Michelangelostraße; at the intersection with Prenzlauer Allee, it becomes Wisbyer Straße.
Ostseestraße features a green strip separating the two directions of traffic along its entire length. Between the intersections with Hosemannstraße and Roelckstraße, and the intersection with Mandelstraße, lies the small but charming Ostseeplatz—a park with a few trees, bushes, and benches that invite visitors to linger.
The street was built as early as the late 18th century. However, Ostseestraße did not receive its current name until 1913, in reference to the Scandinavian Quarter, which is located northwest of Ostseestraße, behind Schönhauser Allee.
Parts of the architecture along Ostseestraße is striking, catching the eye above all with its many relatively grand apartment buildings. As far as I know, in the mid-1950s, impressive residential buildings were constructed here literally from the rubble of World War II—buildings that, from a distance, might vaguely resemble the grand structures on Karl-Marx-Allee. However, the buildings along Ostseestraße are older than those on Karl-Marx-Allee.
Shopping Options on Ostseestraße
Ostseestraße is primarily a residential street—small shops and cafés are hard to find. Near Hosemannstraße is the Donghailou—a restaurant serving Chinese cuisine. And then there are the big stores: at the intersection with Greifswalder Straße, you’ll find an Obi home improvement store, a MediaMarkt, and an Edeka supermarket, a medical center, as well as smaller snack bars and shops. And at the other end, at the intersection with Prenzlauer Allee, there’s a Rewe supermarket, as well as smaller restaurants and snack bars.
