At first glance, Lützowstraße in Berlin’s Tiergarten neighborhood (Mitte district) might seem a bit unremarkable—it’s not purely a residential street, nor is it a major thoroughfare—and yet Lützowstraße somehow feels just right. And the Gay Museum, which is located here, is definitely worth a visit.

A Walk Down Lützowstraße

Lützowstraße runs relatively straight in an east-west direction. At its eastern end, Lützowstraße meets Flottwellstraße and the park at Gleisdreieck. To the west, it meets Lützowplatz and the adjacent Lützowufer.

With a total length of about 1.3 kilometers, Lützowstraße is easy to walk—you can cover the entire street in 15 to 20 minutes. Of course, if you want to stop and look at this and that along the way, it will take you a little longer.

We’ll start our walk at the western end of Lützowstraße. Perhaps you’ve just been to the Felleshus of the Nordic Embassies, which are located very close by—or visited an exhibition at the Haus am Lützowplatz—and now want to take a leisurely stroll to Potsdamer Platz or the Park am Gleisdreieck—and stop by the Gay Museum halfway there.

First, Lützowstraße crosses Derfflingerstraße. The Gay Museum is already located between Derfflingerstraße and the next intersection with Genthiner Straße—at number 73, on the right-hand side.

Between Genthiner Straße and Kluckstraße, on the right-hand side, is Magdeburger Platz—a small, charming park with a playground in the middle.

Next, we come to the intersection with Potsdamer Straße. To the left, the road crosses the Landwehr Canal, past the Kulturforum toward Potsdamer Platz—to the right, it heads toward Bülowstraße. Potsdamer Straße divides Lützowstraße into two parts, so to speak. The we

Between the intersections of Körnerstraße and Bissingzeile, on the right-hand side at Lützowstraße 102, 103, and 104, stands the former headquarters of Maggi GmbH—the Maggi House.

A short distance further on, across the street at Lützowstraße 6, stands a historic, landmark-protected residential building from the Gründerzeit era. With its façade in the Italian Renaissance style (Florentine palazzi), it stands as a silent testament to the fact that this neighborhood was once very prosperous.

And now we’ve arrived at the park at Gleisdreieck. From here, it’s only about a 10-minute walk to Potsdamer Platz—or we can just stay in the park a little longer and relax.
